Pocket Gems

Wild Beyond is a real time strategy, player-versus-player game that achieved ‘Game of the Day’ feature on the iOS App Store for its exceptional design. This was Pocket Gem’s vision for a strategic game on mobile systems for players on the go. Within a tight-knit strike team, I contributed to the conceptualization and implementation of the game’s features, and extensively to the UX design and cross-functional collaboration throughout development.

Highlights

  • Cross-functional Design

In collaboration with product, engineering, game design, and UX teams, I ensured every feature was meticulously crafted and aligned with our strategic vision. Working closely with product managers and game designers, I helped steer our game design towards a user-centric approach by incorporating user research. I also partnered closely with software engineers in the implementation of UI in our in-house engine, and learned new skills outside the norm of designer responsibilities. Additionally, I joined forces with other UX designers to refine and streamline our team’s design processes.

  • User Centered Approach

Championing user research and usability testing, I set up research methodologies to inform our design decisions, enhance user experience, and discover optimizations in the conversion funnel. The findings I provided from in-depth usability studies, user interviews, and player personas provided critical insights that addresses gaps in our quantitative data, steering product managers and game designers towards user-centric solutions.

  • Empowering Teams

My contributions extended beyond design; I also partook in fostering a collaborative culture by sharing my expertise across the company. I delivered a comprehensive presentation/training on UI implementation with our engine to both engineers and designers, which bridged the understanding of workflows and communication between these two functions. I took on this initiative because I have a commitment to empower teammates with technical knowledge and process knowledge.
